Who knew making homemade granola could be this easy? This recipe is wholesome, nourishing and absolutely delicious.
I’ve been on a really big granola kick lately. I put it on pretty much everything: sprinkling it over yogurt, smoothie bowls, oatmeal, and ice cream. I even enjoy it as a replacement cereal with a bowl of milk, it hits the spot every time.
Granola is one of those simple foods that can satisfy a sweet tooth and provide a warm, cozy and crunchy taste. If you couldn’t tell, I’m obsessed with granola and especially with my homemade elderberry maple granola recipe.
The truth is, most granola brands in the grocery store are full of unnecessary and unhealthy ingredients like seed oils, refined sugar and preservatives. That’s when I discovered that it can be much cheaper and healthier to make granola at home.
Homemade granola not only tastes ten times better, but it also gives me such peace of mind over what ingredients my family and I are eating.
This elderberry maple granola recipe has quickly become my favorite. The simplicity of these flavors is everything; the tangy note of elderberry blends perfectly with the sweetness of the maple syrup. My favorite thing to do is to prepare a fresh batch over the weekend, so we can enjoy the goodness all week long.
I really look forward to this little weekend routine and knowing I’m supporting our health through it. It’s one of those intentional choices for our health and helps provide a nourishing snack for the whole week.
The choice to use elderberry and maple syrup goes beyond flavor. It’s rooted in using health-boosting ingredients that keep our bodies strong.
My Favorite Weekly Staple
After I decided to ditch the store-bought granola, I just searched for a simple starter recipe on my phone and realized it would be much easier than I thought. It took a few tries and some tweaks to perfect my go-to recipe, and that's when I decided to spice things up.
Why not spice it up with a powerful superfood and a delicious natural sweetener? That’s how I decided to add some elderberry syrup and maple syrup to the mix. This is one of the best decisions I've made when it comes to granola.
These two flavors tasted so good together that I had to start doubling the recipe because we go through a batch so fast. But I also chose these syrups for far more beneficial reasons.
Conventional refined sugars are not good for you in any way or form; it’s just the hard truth. Luckily, we can find some pretty great alternatives in nature, like honey, dates, coconut nectar and maple syrup. For this recipe, I chose maple syrup because I love the flavor and how it bakes into the granola; it feels so cozy and has the perfect amount of richness.
Adding elderberry syrup to the mix started as a wellness idea, but we really grew to love the tang it added to this granola recipe. I try to use elderberries as much as possible so we can reap the benefits like reducing inflammation, supporting immune health and relieving cold and flu symptoms.
A recipe this good and this health-boosting has earned a special place in our kitchen, and maybe it will in yours, too, once you give it a try. Now, let me give you the scoop on what you’ll need to grab for this recipe.
Gather These Ingredients
You may already have some of these ingredients in your pantry, but if not, you may want to make a quick run to the store to stock up on the rest. You’ll want to have these ingredients on hand because this recipe may become a favorite for you, like it is for us.
Ingredients:
-
2 cups of organic rolled oats
-
1 cup of roughly chopped pecans (you could sub for other nuts as well)
-
3 tbsp of Organic Elderberry Syrup
-
2 ½ tbsp of nut butter (almond, peanut, cashew)
-
1 cup of pure maple syrup
-
2 ½ tbsp of avocado oil
-
1 ½ tsp of ground cinnamon
-
½ tsp of ground nutmeg
-
½ tsp of salt
For these ingredient measurements, you can make a decent amount of granola. But, if you’re anything like us, you may want to double the recipe just in case. Another big thing I love about this elderberry maple granola recipe is how easy it is to make.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Now, here’s the fun part: putting it all together and getting some really delicious granola to snack on. It won't take you long to whip up the granola mixture and clean up. Then you can kick back and relax while the oven does its thing.
Before you know it, that timer will ding, and you’ll have a crave-worthy batch of elderberry maple granola.
Instructions:
-
Preheat: Preheat your oven to 325℉ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Make the Granola: Grab a mixing bowl and combine the oats, pecans, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Then stir in the elderberry syrup, avocado oil and maple syrup. You’ll want to add the almond butter last.
-
Bake: Spread the granola mixture evenly on the baking sheet and pop it in the oven. Set a timer for 12 minutes, stir after that time, then put it back in the oven for a final 13 minutes.
-
Serve & Store: Let your granola completely cool before storing it in an airtight glass container, or eat some warm off the pan if you want. You can use this granola to top ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal and so much more; the sky’s the limit.
